Visit of the rescue services
As part of our Oral language curriculum, the children were learning all about local rescue services. To support the children’s vocabulary development, the rescue services visited our school, a visit kindly organised by parent and paramedic Conor Devine. The children were first visited by two local paramedics, and they explained what their job entailed, how they treat injuries, some of the equipment they use and told stories of accidents they had attended to.
Next the children were attended to by 2 people from the Civil Defence. The Civil Defence explained to the children how they attend events such as local sports days, hurling matches, family fun days and attends to minor accidents at these events.
The highlight of the day was the children’s trip outside to the ambulance. The children were allowed sit in the front of the ambulance and here the loud siren. They then moved to the back of the ambulance where they seen all the different equipment used by the ambulance crew and used some of the equipment such as the stethoscope, thermometer, and blood pressure monitor. Each child took turns lying on the stretcher and some were tempted to go for a little snooze!!!
