October Newsletter
24th October 2016
Dear Parents & Guardians,
Please find below a list of recent and upcoming events.
St. Thomas’ County Final Success:
Congratulations to the victorious St. Thomas’ Senior Hurling team on their great win in the County final. We were delighted to welcome the team and management to the school on Friday 21st October. We wish them well as they go on to represent Galway in the All-Ireland series.
Maths Week:
The children enjoyed a very successful week. They got to experience different activities like maths trails, games, puzzles, projects and everyday maths. Thanks to all the teachers for making the week so enjoyable for the children. I would encourage you to use maths in everyday situations with your children.
Parent-Teacher Meetings:
This year’s parent-teacher meetings are taking place on Tuesday 22nd November from
1-5pm. We will be in contact after the mid-term break to confirm times. Children will go home at 12.30pm and buses will run as normal.
Cyber-Bullying Talks:
There was a disappointing turn-out for the talk on Wednesday 5th October. Thanks to Brendan Smith for coming on the night. Those who were in attendance found it very informative and beneficial.
Mini 7’s Hurling:
Congratulations to the boys hurling team that reached the County finals on Friday 14th October. They came up against the eventual winners Mountbellew and gave a good account of themselves.
Hurling and Camogie Training:
The boys and girls benefitted greatly from training after school on Thursday evenings for the last month. Thanks to Ms. Hayes for giving her time.
Shoe-Box Appeal:
The leaflets for this years’ Christmas Shoebox Appeal are being sent out today. The last day for returning the boxes is Wednesday 9th November.
School Book Fair:
This years’ school book fair will take place on the week starting Monday 21st November. Parents will be able to view the books on the day of the parent-teacher meetings on Tuesday 22nd. As always a percentage of the money spent can be used by the school to purchase new books for the school library.
S.E.S.E. Trail:
3rd to 6th classes will be going on their termly S.E.S.E. trail on Thursday 27th October. This term we are going to the Windfarms in Sonnagh. We would like to thank Frank O’Donnell of Corr na Gaoithe Teo for facilitating the visit and for providing some refreshments for the children on their visit.
Bun & Biscuit Day:
This term the children focussed on procedural writing. As part of this the children wrote different recipes in school and tried them out. On Friday 28th October, 3rd and 4th class are having their bun and biscuit day to display their recipes and baking, from 2.15 to 2.45pm. All parents are welcome.
Halloween:
The children will be allowed to wear Halloween costumes if they have them on Friday 28th October.
Congratulations to former pupils Eibhlín Lee and Andrew Fahey who were part of the Supermac’s racing team from St. Brigid’s Vocational School, Loughrea, who represented Galway and Ireland in the “F1 in Schools” World Finals in Austin, Texas. They took home major honours winning the prestigious Scrutineering Award. Well done to all involved.
If you have any queries in relation to any of the above, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Yours sincerely,
Francis O’Connor
