Aistear – At the restaurant

Our theme for January was “Food and Healthy food”. This integrated well with our Active schools campaign which is currently underway.
The children discussed the 5 food groups , healthy meals, unhealthy food ,created a healthy food book, discussed how to look after their bodies , read the story Handa’s surprise and discussed the nutrition in the fruit in Handa’s basket . They created their own healthy smoothies and wrote up the recipes for the smoothie.

As part of play time, the children opened up a Restaurant in the play corner . In construction they created restaurants using large building blocks. In small world they built a drive through of various types of restaurants. Using play dough they created a healthy dinner plate , and as part of junk art they painted Fruit Bowls  based on Picasso’s painting, created fruit and veg bowls from paper plates and made jewellery that the women in the Massai tribe (Handa’s surprise) in Kenya may have wore.
