December Newsletter 18th December 2017 Dear Parents & Guardians, Please find below a list of recent and upcoming events. Christmas Concerts: Preparations are well under way for this year’s concerts. We look forward to seeing you all on Wednesday 20th. The times for each class are below: Infants: 11:30 – 12:00 1st & 2nd: 12:15 – 12:45 3rd & 4th: 1:00 – 1:30 5th & 6th: 1:45 – 2.30 Staff Changes: As you know Ms. Hayes and her husband Francis are expecting their first child in the coming weeks. We wish them all the very best from everyone in the school. Mr. Finnegan has been teaching the class for the last number of weeks and the children in 3rd & 4th have really benefitted from his teaching. We wish Mr. Finnegan the very best in his future teaching career. In January the class will be taught by Ms. Murphy and we look forward to welcoming Ms. Murphy to our staff. Swimming Lessons: Swimming lessons will commence in January for children from 3rd – 6th class and we will make contact early in the New Year with the necessary arrangements. Parish Bazaar: On behalf of everyone in the school I would like to thank the Parents Council for once again organising the Raffle and Cake Sale at the Parish Bazaar. Kilchreest N.S. Interschool Fundraising Quiz: We will be running the interschool Quiz for children from 3rd – 6th class again this year and the date is provisionally booked for Thursday 18th January at 7:30pm in the Meadow Court Hotel. Further information will follow in the New Year and again we look forward to your help and support. Dates for your attention: – Christmas Holidays Friday 22nd December – children go home at 12:30pm – School re-opens Monday 8th January 2018 – Staff Meeting Wednesday 17th January – children go home at 12:30pm Clothes Collection: We will be having another school clothes collection in January. Read MoreNovember 2017 Newsletter 30th November 2017 Dear Parents & Guardians, Please find below a list of recent and upcoming events. Science Week: Thanks to all the teachers for organising activities in their classrooms this year. We are also grateful to the Principal of St. Brigid’s Vocational School, Sean Connolly, and two of his staff, 1st class parent Ms. Tannian and Mr. Maher, for organising TY students to present experiments to all the children in the school. The children really enjoyed seeing the various aspects of science first hand. Some photos of the children doing the experiments were taken by the secondary school teachers on the day. These are for use on their school website. If you do not want your child’s photo to be used on the St. Brigid’s Vocational School website, please indicate it in your child’s homework journal before Tuesday 5th December. Parent-Teacher Meeting: As usual there was a great response to the meetings this year. If any parent was unable to attend and would like a meeting, please make contact with the class teacher and a suitable time will be arranged. Book Fair: The annual Book Fair was very successful again this year. €846 was collected, 50% of which the school was able to spend on books to update our libraries. Thanks to all the parents and children who supported the Book Fair and to Ms. Keely for organising it. A special word of thanks to Joby for all her hard work, particularly on the evening of the Parent-Teacher meetings. Team Hope Shoebox Appeal: There was a fantastic response to the Christmas Shoebox appeal this year. A total of 108 boxes were collected. Thanks to everyone for contributing and helping this very worthy cause. Thanks also to Ms. Hayes for organising the distribution of leaflets and to Ms. Kelly for their collection. The last day for returning the boxes is Friday 10th November. • School Book Fair: This years’ school Book Fair will take place on the week starting Monday 20th November. Parents will be able to view the books on the day of the Parent-Teacher meetings on Tuesday 21st November. As always a percentage of the money spent can be used by the school to purchase new books for the school library. • Lenrec Clothes Collection: Thanks to all the parents who brought in bags of clothes for the fundraising clothes collection. I will communicate the monies raised when known. • Hurling and Camogie: Our school Hurling and Camogie teams participated in the Mini-7’s competitions recently. Both teams did their best and represented the school with pride. Both teams were also invited to Kilnadeema N.S. for a camogie challenge and the Sam Mitchell Hurling Tournament. Congratulations to the boys on winning the trophy, they played with great heart and determination. Thanks to Kilnadeema N.S. for organising the tournament and to Ms. Hayes for looking after the Camogie team. • Bun & Biscuit Day: The children in 3rd and 4th class hosted their annual Bun & Biscuit Day on Friday 13th October. Please find below a list of recent and upcoming events. • Galway All-Ireland Winning Success: Congratulations to captain, David Burke, Eanna and all the Burke family on the historic achievement of winning the All-Ireland for the first time in 29 years. We are so proud of David and his achievements and look forward to welcoming Liam McCarthy to the school in the coming weeks. • Thanks to all the children, parents and staff who contributed to the Nationwide programme in advance of the All-Ireland. It was lovely for the school to be part of the build-up. Special thanks to Ms. Hayes for having the contacts in RTE. • Congratulations to 6th class pupil, Melissa Clarke, on winning the u-12 All-Ireland title for the Button accordion at the All-Ireland Fleadh in Ennis recently. • Congratulations to past pupil, Aoife Brennan, who was part of the u-16 Galway camogie panel who defeated Wexford in the all-Ireland final. • Morning Supervision: In order to alleviate congestion in the school car-park, teachers have agreed, on a trial basis, to supervise children from 9.10am in the morning. In order for this to work we would ask parents to drop their children off and leave to vacate the space for another car to park in. We will review if this is working with the parents’ association and the Board of Management before the mid-term break in October. • Lenrec Clothes Collection: Our annual clothes collection is on Thursday 28th September. This normally raises about €150 for school funds. The school receives €6 for every 10kg of clothes and €2 for a mobile phone. We would appreciate any support you can give. • County Photos: County photos are coming to the school on Wednesday 13th September to take school photos. Please ensure your children have the correct uniform on. • School Calendar: Please find attached a copy of the amended school calendar for 2017-2018. School closing for summer holidays on Thursday 28th June 2018 and not Thursday 25th. • Staff Meeting: The children will be going home at 12.30pm on Wednesday 20th September to facilitate a staff meeting. Table Quiz: This year’s quiz which we use as a school fundraiser was once again a great success. We had in excess of 60 teams participating. I would like to thank all the parents and staff for helping on the night. A special word of thanks to Ms. Kelly for organising the event. The quiz raised approximately €1,200.00. Credit Union Quiz Teams: Well done to our school quiz teams who participated in the Credit Union quiz in Loughrea this year. Thanks to Ms. Keely for preparing the children. Clothes Collection: We had a fantastic response to our recent clothes collection. Thanks to all parents and guardians who contributed. World Book Day is Thursday 2nd March. Children can dress up as a character from their favourite book on that day. Enrolments: We are now taking enrolments for September 2017. If you know of anyone who might be interested in enrolling their child in the school, please ask them to contact the office on 091 840112. Congratulations to past pupil, David Burke, on being named captain of Galway Senior Hurling team for the second year. We hope that David will be bringing the Liam McCarthy Cup back to the school in September. Parents Council Meeting: There is an important Parents Council Meeting on TUESDAY 28th February at 8.00pm in the school. There is an important decision to be made about Bus transport for school activities that affects parents and guardians. I would encourage all parents to attend. Junior Entrepreneurial Programme: The children in 5th & 6th class have been working very hard on their Business – “KNS Health Foods”. They have come up with a very good idea and have been busy in production and taking orders. It has gone very well for them so far and we thank you for your continued support. Write-a-book: Congratulations to 6th class pupil, Josh Cunningham, for having his book chosen as the winning entry from the school in the annual write-a-book competition run by the Galway Education Centre. Read MoreJanuary 2017 Newsletter Dear Parents & Guardians, I would like to wish you and your families a very happy new year. Please find below a list of recent and upcoming events. Christmas Carol Service: I would like to congratulate the children for their performances of this year’s Christmas carol service. I would also like to thank the teachers for preparing the children so well. Active Schools: The school is looking to be recognised as an active school. As part of this process we are trying to encourage the children to receive their recommended daily allowance of 60 mins exercise per day. The following are some whole school approaches: (i) Fit 4 5 in the mornings; (ii) Busy Break on Wednesdays and (iii) P.E homework. We would welcome your support and ask that you encourage the children to do the exercise as part of homework. Swimming: Please see attached details of this year’s swimming lessons for children from 3rd – 6th. Table Quiz: Our annual inter-schools fundraising Table Quiz will take place on Thursday 19th January 2017 at 7.15pm. in the Meadow Court Hotel. The Quiz is open to children from 3rd – 6th class and tables of 4 cost €20.00. We will also need some help from parents to correct and collect on the night. If you are available to help, please let the class teacher know with a note in your child’s diary. This is always a great evening for the children and a good fundraising event for the school. We welcome your support and assistance. Clothes Collection: Our next school clothes collection is on Wednesday 25th January 2017. Reading World Cup: Our annual Reading World Cup is under way at the moment for children from 1st – 6th. This is one of our initiatives to promote reading in the school. School Closures: Staff Meeting Wednesday 18th January – children go home at 30pm. Buses will run as normal on all half days.
