In September, children in 3rd and 4th class carried out a STEM project to design a new school car park and land development. They began by exploring the school’s current car park and the land at the back of the school, discussing the school’s plans and the various factors that need to be considered when designing a new space. Next, the children made a list of things to consider in their own designs and drew up their own maps with their ideas. They then built models of their designs using LEGO, cardboard, and Duplo. Finally, the children had the opportunity to view the official plans drawn up for the school by an engineer. They also welcomed two special visitors to the class: Ray Keenan, Kate Keenan’s dad, and Evlyn Fahy, Dean and Noah Fahy’s mum. Both Ray and Evlyn are engineers, and they spoke to the children about their jobs and what it’s like to work in engineering. The children were very inspired by their talks. This STEM project was a great learning experience for the children. They learned about the engineering design process, as well as the importance of considering all of the factors involved in designing a new space. They also had the opportunity to learn from real-world engineers, which was a very valuable...
Read MoreKilchreest National School is situated in a beautiful rural setting, surrounded by fields, forests, and rivers. This made it the perfect place to take our first and second class students on a nature walk. As we walked, we kept an eye out for birds and other wildlife. We also stopped to admire the wildflowers and trees. On route we experienced a variety of trees, including oak, ash, and birch. We encouraged our pupils to use their senses to explore the natural world around them. Taking our pupils on a nature walk was a great way to teach them about the natural world and to help them develop an appreciation for the outdoors. It was also a fun and active way to...

It is often performed by sports teams before games, but it can also be performed at other events, such as ceremonies and festivals. Read More3rd to 6th class students went on a local trail to Woodville Garden. We were blessed with beautiful sunshine and had a great day exploring the walled garden. Many thanks to Margarita Donohue for hosting us and providing the tour. Woodville Garden is a beautiful walled garden located in Loughrea. It is one of the oldest walled gardens in Ireland, dating back to the 17th century. The garden is home to a wide variety of plants, including flowers, shrubs, and trees. There are also several ponds and fountains in the garden. Our tour of Woodville Garden began with a walk through the walled entrance. As we entered the garden, we were greeted by the sight of a beautiful rose garden. We continued on our walk and explored the different areas of the garden, including the herbaceous border, the vegetable garden, and the orchard. We had a wonderful day exploring Woodville Garden. We learned a lot about the different types of plants that grow in the garden and we had a lot of fun playing games and having a picnic. We would like to thank Margarita Donohue again for hosting us and providing the tour. Woodville...
Read MoreDear Parents, I would like to thank you all for your support and cooperation as we have adjusted to our new circumstances since our sudden closure on March 12th. We are very grateful to all parents who have been supporting their children’s learning at home by ensuring that assigned work is completed and sent onto the teachers. Our strong home-school links continue to be forged through communication between teachers and pupils and it is heartening for teachers to see the children going to such great effort to present their written and oral pieces so well. We are awaiting guidance from the Department of Education on the re-opening of Schools in September. The Minister has recently stated that we should have this road map shortly. Once it is communicated the planning for the safe re-opening of the school will start. In the coming days we will be posting out your child’s end of year school report, book lists, details about next year’s book rental scheme, the school calendar and the June newsletter. To our 6th class students I am very sorry that your last year in Kilchreest N.S. has turned out like this. I am still planning to have your Graduation ceremony on Thursday 25th of June and I will be in touch with you & your parents to finalise the details shortly. I know I speak for all the teachers when I say that we are all missing school. Please pass on our regards to the children and tell them that of all the things we are missing about school we miss them the most. Yours sincerely, Francis O’Connor...
