Read MoreFor the month of February, our theme was Clothes . The children had lots of fun bringing in their favourite clothes from home and selling and buying them in the clothes shop. The shopkeepers were busy picking out clothes for the customers, showing them to the dressing room, using the till,, and helping the customers In the construction area and small world, the children were busy building various clothes shops, – sports shops, children’s clothes shops, department stores, boutiques and stocking them. Using play dough the children designed out fits for men and women and there was a great variety of fashion on display, In Junk Art, the children discovered a variety of fabrics, i.e wool, hessian, felt , curtain material, and created outfits using these materials. They also created Fabric Letters using their initials. Other activities this month included learning the names of clothes in Irish, discovering what materials are waterproof and which are not. Read MoreOur theme for January was “Food and Healthy food”. This integrated well with our Active schools campaign which is currently underway. The children discussed the 5 food groups , healthy meals, unhealthy food ,created a healthy food book, discussed how to look after their bodies , read the story Handa’s surprise and discussed the nutrition in the fruit in Handa’s basket . They created their own healthy smoothies and wrote up the recipes for the smoothie. As part of play time, the children opened up a Restaurant in the play corner . In construction they created restaurants using large building blocks. In small world they built a drive through of various types of restaurants. Using play dough they created a healthy dinner plate , and as part of junk art they painted Fruit Bowls based on Picasso’s painting, created fruit and veg bowls from paper plates and made jewellery that the women in the Massai tribe (Handa’s surprise) in Kenya may have wore.
