APRIL NEWSLETTER Dear Parents & Guardians, Welcome back after the Easter holidays. Please find below a list of recent and upcoming events. School Athletics: The annual John Manning Inter-school athletics competition will take place on Wednesday 25th April. Temple Street Coffee Morning: Denise Lucia, Niamh Davison’s grandma is organising a cake sale in aid of the Ronald McDonald House Charity. Denise will be making various cakes that will be on sale on Friday 20th April in the school hall from 1:00 – 3:00pm. We would ask each child to bring €2.00 on the day. Parents are welcome to contribute by baking some cakes for sale or buying some of the treats for themselves. This is a very worthy cause and we would ask people to support it if you can. R.S.E.Talks: The Relationship Sexuality Education talk is taking place this year for 5th and 6th class children and parents on Tuesday 14th June from 7:15pm – 9:15pm in the school hall. The talk will be delivered by qualified professional, Therese Fennessy. School Matches: There will be a number of hurling and camogie matches coming up in the next few weeks. Our school policy is that we get buses for all matches. We ask for €2 per child to help with the cost of bus. Public Library Visit: We are having our annual visit from the school’s library service on Monday 23rd April. Once again I would like to thank the school S.N.A. Joby Madden for co-ordinating the exchange of the books this year. School Nurse Visit: The junior infant children will have their vision and hearing tested by the school nurse on Thursday 17th May. First Confession/First Communion: I would like to congratulate our 2nd class children on making their First Penance. Preparations are well under way for First Communion on Saturday 26th May. School Closures: Friday 4th May Annual leave. Monday 7th May – Bank Holiday Friday 25th May – Referendum Wednesday 30th May – Staff meeting. Children go home at 12:30pm. Buses run as normal Thursday 31st May – Teachers In-service. New Language Curriculum Monday 4th June – Bank Holiday Tuesday 5th June – Annual leave. January 2018 January Newsletter Dear Parents & Guardians, I would like to wish you and your families a very Happy New Year. Please find below a list of recent and upcoming events. Congratulations: On behalf of the whole school community I would like to extend our sincere congratulations to Ms. Hayes and her husband Francis on the birth of their baby daughter Aoibhín. Aoibhín was born on the first of January and it was a fantastic way in which to greet 2018. Junior Infant, Niamh Davison: Prior to Christmas we got the news that Junior Infant student Niamh Davison had taken ill. Niamh had a serious operation over the Christmas period and thankfully she has come through it. Niamh is on the road to recovery and we ask that you continue to remember Niamh and her family in your prayers. New Staff Member: We welcome Ms. Murphy as 3rd and 4th class teacher for the remainder of the school year. Following interviews for the post in November Ms. Murphy was the outstanding candidate and we are delighted to have her on staff. Table Quiz: Our annual inter-schools fundraising Table Quiz will take place on Thursday 18th January 2018 at 7:15pm in the Meadow Court Hotel. The quiz is open to children from 3rd – 6th class and tables of 4 cost €20. We will need some assistance on the night, so if you are available, please let the class teacher know by writing a note in your child’s diary. This is always a great evening for the children and a good fundraising event for the school. We welcome your support and assistance. Reading World Cup: Our annual Reading World Cup is under way at the moment for children from 1st – 6th class. This is one of our initiatives to promote reading in the school. We would encourage you to read to your children and listen to them read as often as you can. Tin Whistle: Tin whistle lessons will re-commence on Tuesday 16th January with Yvonne Barrett. Maths week October 2017

Despite Storm Ophelia shortening the school week, the children took part in a very enjoyable Maths week. All children were busy using their estimation skills trying to guess how many sweets were in the jars- Eabha Smyth in 1st class and Daniel Kelly , 4th class being the lucky winners!! The school yard was a hive of activity with  children carrying out their maths trails and discovering maths in the school environment. Lego maths was enjoyed by 1st & 2nd class. The infants made a number character out of their favourite number, made shape monsters and designed their own Maths hat. First and second also designed a maths hat. Aistear – People who help us

In March, our Aistear theme was people in the community. In the play corner  the children had lots of fun pretending to be at the doctor’s surgery, making appointments, explaining their illnesses and prescribing dome very strange medicines !! In the construction area and small world, the children were busy building the various places of work in teh community- the garda station, the hospital, the fire station, the shops. Using play dough the children were making hoses & ladders for the firemen, a stretcher for the paramedics, a stethoscope, bag and thermometer for the doctor and lots of other items. In Junk Art, the children used cardboard boxes and a variety of other materials and objects to create their own emergency vehicle. Other activities this month included learning the names of people who help us, their places of work, their job description , and what clothes they wear. Children discussed and wrote about what they would like to be when they grow up.  We read the book ” The Giant Postman” and learned songs and poems about people at work! Aistear – The Clothes shop

For the month of February, our theme was Clothes . The children had lots of fun bringing in their favourite clothes from home and selling and buying them in the clothes shop. The shopkeepers were busy picking out clothes for the customers, showing them to the dressing room, using the till,, and helping the customers In the construction area and small world, the children were busy building various clothes shops, – sports shops, children’s clothes shops, department stores, boutiques and stocking them. Using play dough the children designed out fits for men and women and there was a great variety of fashion on display, In Junk Art, the children discovered a variety of fabrics, i.e wool, hessian, felt , curtain material, and created outfits using these materials. They also created Fabric Letters using their initials. Other activities this month included learning the names of clothes in Irish, discovering what materials are waterproof and which are not. Infants enjoying active schools!!
